July's Birthstone: Ruby

July's birthstone is one of the most highly prized of gems throughout history. Symbolic of passion, protection and prosperity, the ruby has been revered since ancient times. Records suggest that rubies were traded along China’s North Silk Road as early as 200 B.C.

Rubies were once considered to have magical powers, and were worn as a talisman against evil.  They were thought to grow darker when peril was imminent, and to return to their original color once danger was past—provided they were in the hands of the rightful owner!

The word ruby comes from the Latin word "ruber," meaning red.  It is a variety of the mineral corundum, which is the same material as sapphire. Corundum is the second hardest material after diamond, making ruby an excellent choice for an alternative engagment ring gemstone. Rubies are symbolic of eternal love, and if worn on the left hand, ancient lore has it that rubies bring good fortune to the wearer, making it a very romantic choice!
