Pike Place Market

Pike Place Market is considered by many to be the heart and soul of downtown Seattle.

Pike place market foundation logo

While our storefront is temporarily closed, our website is still open! During the month of April, 20% of all sales will be donated to the Pike Place Market Foundation. The Foundation supports the farmers, growers, and small businesses that we all love at the Market, as well as the food bank, senior center, low-income housing, healthcare, daycare, and more. As a small family-owned business ourselves, we know that shopping local is more important than ever. With your help, we can make a difference!

Our annual Mother's Day Sethi Couture Trunk Show on May 8th and 9th has been postponed, but we have plans for a very fun giveaway. Be sure to follow us on Instagram and Facebook for details! Moms are doing more than ever right now, and we are here and available to deliver if you'd like to give her (or yourself) a lovely gift on May 10th. If you would prefer to shop in person when we reopen, why not treat her to a Fox's gift card? Gift cards are also a great way to support your favorite small businesses.

During this time our employees are being paid and are ready to help you! Keiko and Justine have both been at Fox's for over 12 years. Keiko is our inventory manager and keeps Fox's running smoothly behind the scenes. When she's not working she loves to garden and volunteer. Justine is our buyer and manages our social media accounts. If you send us a message on Instagram or Facebook, she's who you'll be talking to. When she's not working, she loves to quilt and sew.

Jerri is our appraiser and knows everything there is to know about gemstones. She holds a Graduate Gemologist degree from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and is also a Certified Gemological Appraiser through the American Gemological Society (AGS). This certification is held by fewer than 400 people in the world! If you email us through our website, you will most likely be talking to Jerri. She loves the Seattle Mariners and is our in-house jewelry model.

Zoey is the third-generation owner of Fox's, after her father, Chai, and her grandfather, Sid. She took over in 2014 when we moved to our new location at the Fairmont Olympic Hotel and runs our small team with care and dedication. She's currently running Fox's via Zoom meetings while homeschooling her three children (aka our future bosses). She loves to cook and bake, and is involved with several local organizations.

We miss seeing you in person and celebrating your birthdays, anniversaries, engagements, and other special milestones, but we are still here for you. Please don't hesitate to reach out via email or social media. We love interacting with you on Instagram and Facebook and seeing your at-home jewelry looks, so keep tagging us and sending pictures!

August's Birthstones: Peridot, Spinel, and Sardonyx

August's Birthstones: Peridot, Spinel, and Sardonyx

August is one of only three months of the year that has three birthstones! They are peridot, spinel, and sardonyx.

Green oval, pink rock, and reddish triangular stone

Peridot is the most common birthstone associated with August, and has a very interesting history. It is one of the oldest known gemstones, with ancient records documenting the mining of peridot as early as 1500 B.C. The main source of peridot in the ancient world was an island in the Egyptian Red Sea, and some historians believe that Cleopatra's famous emeralds were actually peridots.

Peridot's formation is also different from that of almost all other gems. Most gems are formed in the Earth's crust. The two exceptions are peridot and diamond, which are formed much deeper in the Earth; in the mantle. Peridot forms in magma in the upper mantle, about 20 to 55 miles deep. It is brought to the surface by tectonic or volcanic activity. Diamond, by contrast, is formed much deeper in the mantle, around 100 to 150 miles below the surface, under extreme pressure and high temperatures.

Peridot was used anciently as a talisman and has a mystical reputation. It was believed to dissolve enchantments, ward off anxiety, and cure asthma. It was considered most powerful when set in gold.

Multicolored and multishaped spinel gemstones

Spinel is an incredibly beautiful gemstone which has spent most of its history being confused for ruby or sapphire. Some of the most famous rubies in the world, including the Timur Ruby and the Black Prince's Ruby in the crown jewels of England, have actually turned out to be spinels. Spinel is now a gemstone that is treasured for its own beauty, its wonderful brilliance, hardness, and wonderful range of spectacular colors. One member of the spinel group, magnetite, even has magnetic properties. As early as the 11th century, mariners used this form of spinel to magnetize their compasses. We have two stunning spinel pieces in our store right now, perfect for an August baby likes a gemstone that's off the beaten path.

Sardonyx is the last and most obscure of the August birthstones, although it was the original birthstone for August before the other two came along. Sardonyx combines alternating layers of sard and onyx—two types of the layered mineral chalcedony—to create a reddish zebra-striped stone with white bands.

Used as a stone of strength and protection since ancient times, sardonyx is associated with courage, happiness, and clear communication. Some believe that placing sardonyx at each corner of a house will grant protection against evil.

Fox's Seattle Loves: VitaJuwel by GemWater

Fox's Seattle Loves: VitaJuwel by GemWater

We are so excited to tell you about our newest find - VitaJuwel by GemWater! If you're walked past our shop recently, you've probably admired and wondered about the display in the windows.

Photo of Gem Water bottles in the window at Fox's Seattle

These are lead-free glass water bottles filled with gemstones! Other than looking incredibly beautiful, why would you want to have a water bottle with gemstones in it?

5 Gem Water water bottles with different colors of gemstones in a row

Every type of gemstone has its own unique energy. The energetic charge of quartz is what makes quartz watches work. The idea behind VitaJuwel is that the gemstones in the water impart their energy into the water, and then into you, the drinker.

This idea is nothing new. Dating back to ancient Greece, gemstones have been used to vitalize water for centuries. More recently, Japanese researcher and scientist Dr. Masaru Emoto dedicated his study to water. He determinted that water treated with gemstones water takes on the characteristics and energy or fresh spring water.

This is ordinary tap water under the microscope:

And this is water treated with VitaJuwel under the microscope:

Water from gem water bottle

A scientific evaluation by the renowned German Institute Hagalis, Überlingen validated VitaJuwel’s effect on water. The institute found that the gemstone infused water became more alkaline and less acidic, and that the oxygen content in the water increased.

Because they are products of nature, every gem has its own vibration and affects the water in a unique way. There are 18 different VitaJuwel blends for water, and 1 specifically for wine. If you want to have a sense of well being, "Wellness" is the bottle for you. It contains amethyst, rose quartz, and clear quartz to stimulate and soothe the mind and emotions, foster tranquility, and support healthy and radiant skin.

Feeling stuck? "Inspiration" contains lapis lazuli and rutilated quartz, which are said to relieve sore throats, allow one to speak with wisdom and authority, encourage honesty, and help to lift the feeling of anxiety.

In addition to the personal glass water bottles, there are also hand blown glass vials, droplets, and decanters available to revitalize your water in quantities small and large. Come in to Fox's to see these works of art and see which one can add a little beauty and vitality to your life!

A Love Letter to Alex Sepkus

Dear Alex,

We can hardly believe it's been 26 years since we first laid eyes on you. It was love at first sight! We received a catalog of all the jewelry that would be at the first JCK jewelry trade show to be held in Las Vegas, and as soon as we saw your picture we knew we had to meet you.

Photo of Alex Sepkus wedding bands

We woke up early, full of excitement, and were the first in line to get to see you in person. And you were even more wonderful in person! Your gleaming 18k gold, lovingly hand finished under a microscope! Your whimsical hidden motifs! Your incredible one of a kind gemstones!

Alex Sepkus pink tourmaline ring

We took you home with us and have never looked back. With every passing year, you become more timeless, more unique, and more special. We love to be with you doing fun casual things just as much as we love our fancy nights out.

Alex Sepkus orchard bracelet

Just when I think I know everything there is to know about you, you surprise me with something new. On December 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, from 10am to 6pm, we are so excited to have our annual trunk show with you, where you can show off all your newest finery to all our clients.

Here's to another 26 years!

Love,

Fox's Seattle
