Seattleites can handle rain, but when it comes to heat we are pretty wimpy around here. When the temperature soared over 90 degrees this week, our solution was to seek refuge at the nearby Shug's Soda Fountain!

This gem in Pike Place Market just opened in May. There is a lot of delicious ice cream in Seattle, but this lovely little ice cream parlor is unlike anything else in the city. It features counter seating at a vintage 1930's era soda fountain with a marble countertop, tables inside and out, and a walk up express window outside.

Shug's serves a rotating menu of ice cream from Lopez Island Creamery (Wild Mountain Huckleberry and Just Peachy are being featured at the moment), served on the cone or made into milkshakes, malts, sodas, floats, and sundaes with housemade syrups, sauces, and toppings.

They also serve coffee, tea, beer, wine, and champagne. If you're feeling fancy, you can even have your ice cream float made with prosecco!

Shug's Soda Fountain is located at 1525 1st Avenue in downtown Seattle, just a short walk from Fox's Seattle.

Did you know that there is an exclusive hotel on the rooftop of the Fairmont Olympic Hotel, with over half a million inhabitants? Welcome to Executive Chef Gavin Stephenson's apiary!

Stephenson grew up in a family that made its own bread and jam, grew their own vegetables, and was in many ways very self-sustaining. So when he learned that colony collapse was threatening the world honeybee population, which is responsible for pollinating 80% of the food we eat, he sprang into action.

He proposed building beehives on the rooftop of the Fairmont Olympic Hotel, an idea that the Fairmont enthusiastically embraced (and went on to implement in other Fairmont hotels). Working with Corky Luster of the Ballard Bee Company, Stephenson set up 5 beehives in 2011.

Initially, the plan was only to save the bees and contribute to the environment. But after a steep learning curve, the beehives began to thrive and produce honey. The rooftop of the hotel now holds 10 hives, each one painted by a different department of the hotel. The bees travel many miles a day, and the taste of the honey in each hive is always a surprise.

Visiting the rooftop of the hotel is by invitation of the chef only, but if you'd like to get a taste of this special treat, Olympic Honey Hard Cider is produced by Seattle Cider Co. using honey from the rooftop bees. You can find it at Shuckers and at the Terrace Bar, both in the Fairmont Olympic Hotel.

There is also an exclusive ale called Honeymoon Suite, brewed by Pike Brewing Company using the rooftop honey. It is available on tap at Shuckers, and in bottles at the Terrace Bar.

The Terrace Bar also has a lovely Rooftop Honey Lemon Drop. The next time you come to Fox's, why not treat yourself to some jewelry and then celebrate with one of these delicious drinks? The bees will thank you.

When we first saw Todd Reed's jewelry at the annual Couture show in Las Vegas a few years back, we were instantly captivated. That year we brought home a rough gray diamond that looked like Mount Rainier, rising above a cloud of small white brilliant diamonds set in a palladium coin-edge halo. Our clients had never seen anything like this one-of-a-kind piece, and neither had we.

Todd is a man of many talents, which were fostered by growing up with an artist mother who immersed him in drawing, painting, and other artistic mediums from a yound age. At 10 years old a light went off in his head on a vacation to Arizona, where he watched as a sheet of silver was turned into a piece of jewelry in front of his eyes. By age 19 he had graduated from culinary school, and was working as a leathersmith when he met and was taken under the wing of a diamond collector. Todd fell in love with rough diamonds, and began designing jewelry around the organic shapes of these unique gemstones.

In 1992 he started Todd Reed Jewelry with an aesthetic and committment to ethically sourced diamonds and recycled metals that was years ahead of its time. You can see glimpses into Todd's past as a leathersmith when you see his signature finish work, which can make a sterling silver cuff look as soft as a piece of leather. By the nature of the diamonds he uses, no Todd Reed piece will ever be the same as another. And who doesn't love to own something that no one else has?

That is why we are so thrilled to be opening the Todd Reed Boutique at Fox's Seattle. Our entire back wall will be dedicated exclusively to Todd Reed jewelry. It's our last day in Las Vegas, and after 3 days of admiring jewelry, we have an appointment with Nomos Glashutte. We recently downsized our watch department to focus solely on Nomos, a company that we felt best represented Fox's commitment to independent brands creating limited pieces that you aren't likely to find anywhere else.

Nomos watches are made in Glashutte, Germany, a small town in East Germany that has been the hub of German watchmaking for years. We love the simple, Bauhaus-inspired designs, and the fact that all of the movements in Nomos watches are made in house.

Our last stop of the day is with Sethi Couture. Sisters Pratima and Prerna Sethi grew up in a family of gemstone dealers, surrounded with old world diamonds and vintage jewelry.

Their designs are meant to be worn everyday, and are often delicate and feminine, meant to be stacked and layered. These strands of natural colored and black diamonds are so simple and lovely.

We love Sethi's philosophy of redefining couture in a simple, effortless way. These studs are so fresh and easy!

With that our stay in Las Vegas is done! We head home tired but happy, with our heads full of the beautiful jewelry that will soon be on it's way to Seattle!

Day 3 in Las Vegas starts out with a glowing golden circle in the sky, and glowing golden circles at Gurhan in the form of these stunning 24k gold hammered disc earrings.

Gurhan is best known for his mastery of pure 24k gold, but several years back, he started mixing in sterling silver, and the result was incredibly fun and versatile. Below, Zoey stacks a Gurhan bracelet made of sterling silver, 24k gold, druzy quartz, and onyx with her platinum link Alex Sepkus bracelet.

Gurhan also does stunning work with gemstones, particularly opals. This incredible necklace of opal, kyanite, blue topaz, and moss aqua set in 24k gold came home to Seattle with us!

The next stop is at Harry Kotlar, another 3rd generation family-owned business like Fox's. Kotlar is best known for their signature - and incredibly beautiful - Kotlar cushion diamond, but this lovely oval really caught our eye.

Kotlar is also known for their artisan pave and meticulous craftsmanship. So many engagement rings to choose from!

We can't resist snapping a few pictures to remember these classic pendants by when we are back home.

Our last appointment of the day is with our friend Ray Griffiths. We had the pleasure of having Ray at our store a few months ago, and he is such a wonderful person with a great sense of humor. He couldn't resist getting silly with Zoey's baby bump!

We couldn't resist this row of beautiful blues! Aren't the tassels fun?

We love all of Ray's work, but turquoise mixed with his signature 18k yellow gold crownwork is such an eye-catching combination.

The last event of the day is the Couture awards, to honor the pieces of jewelry from the show that are particularly noteworthy in design and workmanship.

We head home early to compare notes and rest up for our last day at the show.

Rise and shine! It's Day 2 of the Couture show in Las Vegas. Day 2 is always much harder to wake up for than Day 1, because our feet always hurt from the day before! Chai likes to start his day with a dip in the Wynn Hotel's beautiful pool.

Our first appointment of the day is with Mark Patterson. Mark's engagement rings and bands are the epitome of classic, timeless bridal jewelry. We have been carrying his jewelry for over 20 years, and it just doesn't go out of style.

Mark's signature is that all of his engagement rings are made so that the wedding band fits perfectly flush with the engagement ring. Zoey loves his channel-set baguette setting so much that she chose it for her engagement ring!

Our second stop of the day is at Kwiat. We feel a kinship with Kwiat because they are a third generation family owned business, just like us. Kwiat is also known for their stunning ideal cut diamonds. Their jewelry is all handmade in New York City, and their signature is simple, elegant designs that make the diamonds appear to be floating.

Kwiat always has extremely special and rare diamonds to show us, and this year we got to see this natural fancy intense purple-pink diamond!

Our last stop of the day is at Arman Sarkisyan. Arman and his wife, Louiza, are both artists in their own right, and their booth is always decorated beautifully.

This year, there were gorgeous canvases painted by Louiza, still lifes of jewelry in domed apothecary jars, and vases of lush peonies.

We first discovered Arman at Couture four years ago and still swoon over his whimsical, intricate jewelry in 22k gold and oxidized silver. This year, our favorite piece was this lovely bird ring.

That evening, we enjoyed a lovely dinner at Mizumi, one of the restaurants at the Wynn Hotel. Mizumi specializes in award-winning Japanese cuisine and looks out over private Japanese gardens, a koi pond, and a 90-foot waterfall.
